You have to be in the moment walking out here; if you daydream you may miss a coiled snake under a bush. If you have your earbuds in you may miss a warning rattle. It can be tense, or it can be amazing, alive in a beautiful place, wringing all the life out of a series of moments.
The American Outback, out April 3rd, is partially about my love of the desert but it is not a book about the desert. For you it might be a forest or on the sand that faces a wild ocean---anywhere wild, away from a beige world of malls and traffic and jobs we tolerate to pay our bills and have middling health care.
